While in conversation recently whilst working on an E30, it had come up that options for a more ‘built’ rear cross member were no existent. Sure, yes there’s a handful of options out there. They are, however, smaller in tube diameter as well as the baseplates. Additionally, the mounting of these other crossmembers would hinder your ability to utilize many off-the-shelf options when it comes to subframe reinforcements and the like.

I opted to use a larger diameter 4130 tube for the additional strength, the native light-weight properties, as well as the option to run a lower wall thickness overall while still retaining the strength and rigidity to tie together and stiffen the rear shock towers. The baseplate is, as well, 4130 and notched to hug the extruded features of the OEM shock tower.
